Project Background
Designed an end-to-end iOS mobile app to search and review books for problematic content before sharing it with children and students.
Problem
Parents and Teachers are realizing that the books and movies from their childhood contain outdated behaviors, ideologies and terminologies. With busy schedules, they do not have the time to review past favorites before sharing them to children.
Solution
Design a mobile app that provides an easy search engine for Parents and Educators to identify and review problematic content in books with suggested conversation topics to engage critical thinking and group discussion.
Design Process
Research Goals
Discover how common this experience is within target audience
Determine how target audience currently vet a book's content
Gage interest from parents and teachers for this app
User Stories
I asked via Instagram Stories the following question, "What are some movies or books you liked when you were younger, and then when you rewatched/reread them and were caught off guard by how poorly parts of it aged?"
Survey Results
15 teachers and parents completed my survey regarding their experience with sharing works from their childhood with children.
100%
93.9%
Over 50%
enjoys sharing movies and books from their childhood to children
have come across problematic content when revisiting old movies and books
prefers to have an open discussion with children surrounding the problematic content
Common Sense Media only rates the following categories —
Violence and Scariness, Sex, Romance and Nudity, Language, Products and Purchases, Drinking, Drugs and Smoking, Diverse Representation, Educational Value, Positive Messages, and Positive Role Models.
Participants were asked to vote from a list of problematic topics missing from the above categories that they felt should be rated.
*Inappropriate age difference romance, underaged drinking, smoking, etc
Any type of prejudice, especially those that were once widely accepted, I find is very common in children’s books. I would want to know if they’re coming up so I could start a discussion about it.

Usability Testing
I conducted 3 in-person and virtual tests with users who initially took my user research survey. Success was measured on completion rate and user feedback.

Iteration 1: Changed the filter option for Age Range slider to a Grade Level dropdown.
Reading comprehension is measured by grade level in the American school system.
Drag bar to see Before (Left) and After (Right)
Iteration 2: Changed Recently Reviewed
In order to provide a consistent experience, this category needed to follow the other category patterns.
Iteration 3: Added a Sort option
This addition allows users the option to sort their search results.
Next Steps
With more time, JukuDoku would expand on other modern media formats such as, movies, video games, YouTube channels, etc.
A dashboard would also be next on the list and introduce social aspects of the app such as sharing reviews, direct messaging to friends with recommendations and a news feed for collaboration.
